St. Mary's 3-17 Carrick Swan 1-11
A rain sodden Fethard welcomed our U17s and Carrick Swan for the U17 A South Final on Sunday evening.
Mary's started off brightly with points by Shane Ryan and Alex McSherry with Oisin Forristal doing fantastic work around the middle of the field. After 15 minutes, a long range free dropped short and was knocked down to the ground by the Swan keeper where Thomas Charles was on hand to dispatch to the net. Just before the break, captain Ruairi Leahy took on the Swan defence to score a fine individual goal to put the blue and white boys in a healthy position at halftime.
When play resumed, Conor Parker put over some great scores from midfield, while behind him, Tadhg Sheehan at center and Eoghan Walsh at fullback kept the Swan at bay. Pauraic Bond and Joe Higgins continued to drive forward providing good ball into the forwards yielding frees from the Swan defence which were dispatched by Leahy. The decisive score in the came from a storming Leahy run through the middle of the Swan rearguard before flicking a lovely pass to an on running McSherry who hit the net with a first time strike.
The final whistle was greeted with euphoria by the players and families after a job well done. Congratulations to the players and mentors on a fine campaign to date. The team now play Toomevara next Sunday in the Sportsfield for a place in a County Semi Final.
