A nice tribute from South Tipperary GAA
: Jimmy Hewitt (Commercials and St. Marys) Jimmy Hewitt was labelled exceptional well before showcasing his capabilities to the GAA world of South Tipperary. Against the backdrop of the mighty Comeraghs, he won a Waterford Co. Intermediate football and Junior hurling double, with Valley Rovers and Fourmilewater in 1963. He then settled into the all-conquering Commercials Senior team seamlessly, winning a Tipperary Men’s Cup in 1964 before embarking on an envious run of success with the Green & Gold, that yielded five South Champioships (65,66,67,69,71), and four County successes (66,67,69, & 71). A strong, incredibly fit player, he lined out in the Munster Championship with Tipperary in 1966, having previously played National League for the County. In tandem with his great successes with Commercials, was a remarkable contribution to the St. Marys club. In both defence and attack he excelled during the Intermediate Hurling wins of 1972 & 75 which culminated in a County Junior Final (1975) and was instrumental in their ascent to Senior ranks. He imparted his football wisdom, in a coaching capacity to neighbours Old Bridge in the early 80’s helping them to Junior Football honours in 1983. An immense contributor to Clonmel GAA and its environs, particularly Commercials where on a team of stars, some shone brighter than others. Jimmy Hewitt was certainly one of those.
